The launch of brand new research into users and potential users of telecare in England, made possible by Age UK.

Policymakers remain keenly interested in the potential of telecare to enable older people with care needs to remain independent in their own homes, as well as reduce reliance on informal and paid care.

However, a striking feature of telecare policy over the last decade has been the absence of any real evidence on telecare users and potential users. This has implications for policy on targeting – how to connect telecare with potential users – as well funding, i.e. what is the right way for telecare to be paid for, whether through public or private expenditure?

To address these gaps in research, the Strategic Society Centre has conducted a major research study using the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing into telecare users and potential users in England.

This event explored:

  • What is the average income of telecare users?
  • How many potential users of telecare are there in the older population?
  • What is the rate of Attendance Allowance claims among telecare users and potential users?
  • How many family carers are caring for someone who could use telecare?
